A tunnel boring machine (TBM) is a highly advanced piece of engineering equipment designed to excavate tunnels through a wide variety of ground conditions, including soft soil, mixed ground, and hard rock. Unlike traditional drilling and blasting methods, a TBM operates continuously, significantly improving efficiency, safety, and precision while minimizing environmental impact and surface disruption.
The main structure of a TBM includes a rotating cutting head equipped with disc cutters or cutting tools that break the ground at the tunnel face. Behind the cutter head is a shield that supports the surrounding ground, preventing collapse during excavation. As the machine advances, it simultaneously installs tunnel lining segments, usually made of precast concrete, to ensure structural stability. This integrated process allows for faster and safer tunnel construction.
TBMs are widely used in infrastructure projects such as metro systems, railway tunnels, highway tunnels, and water conveyance systems. Depending on the geological conditions, different types of TBMs are selected, including earth pressure balance (EPB) machines, slurry shield machines, and hard rock TBMs. Each type is specifically designed to manage ground pressure, groundwater, and debris removal efficiently.
One of the major advantages of TBMs is their ability to maintain a consistent tunnel profile with high accuracy, reducing the need for additional finishing work. They also generate less noise and vibration compared to conventional methods, making them ideal for urban construction projects. Although the initial investment cost is high, TBMs offer long-term benefits through improved productivity, reduced labor requirements, and enhanced safety standards.
